Data Transfer Project

Very fascinating:

Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Microsoft have officially launched the Data Transfer Project, “a collaboration of organizations committed to building a common framework with open-source code that can connect any two online service providers, enabling a seamless, direct, user-initiated portability of data between the two platforms.” After accessing data via the individual website’s API and authorization mechanisms, the project uses service-specific adapters to “transfer that data into a common format, and then back into the new service’s API.” Developers interested in trying the project out can use the methods listed here and here, but are warned the initiative is still in its early stages and is not ready for public consumption yet.
