Lets address the mass posting of news articles here on the Pub

The pub is quiet these days, and posting news topics helps generate new discussion. I certainly see the value in that. Plus it’s great to stay up to date on advancements and events (although I follow r/cc so it’s almost always redundant).

But does anyone else feel that when 10-25 news posts are made in succession, that it buries the active conversations and actually kills the overall engagement? Most of these news discussions get very few views, and usually zero replies.

That being said, I do appreciate the effort, and see the obvious positive intent. The question is, are the posts accidentally detrimental?

What are your thoughts, and if you feel they’re detrimental, then what potential solutions do you propose so that we can have the best of both worlds? Perhaps a consolidated weekly new thread?

I agree, Peter should just make a separate news page and post it there, keep the “latest” page clean it really looks like a spamfest now @peter

A daily news thread would be a good idea and also active

I remember some type of conversion was thought of or planned for the pub regrading integrating it with yen.io

i think it’s worth talking about. no one ever complained when i was doing it.

what we’ve done is get some help from our growing team in providing some of this value that i was trying to do more consistently. but, perhaps we can space them out a bit more.

thanks for bringing it up. i wonder what other folks feel about it.

it has always been a spam, pointless to make 30 “news” threads each day, IMO it is better to make a single post covering all the news in it, but just the headlines and everyone could click in whatever preview here they like to read further.

Either a single news thread and just reply to 10k posts or make a daily thread stamped with day/date on the headline covering the 20-30 articles, next day another thread with the 20-30 and so on :man_shrugging:t2:

I agree with both sides of this. The only issue I ever had with it was that it was just a cut and paste of the news article there was no added value. @john I really never had a problem with it when you were doing it as you were in the process of building a platform and trying to generate conversation around it.

I would rather see fewer articles but with some insight from the poster. I never really liked the Youtube video’s of people just reading news articles or just posting a cut and paste. I like @Manuel_Villarreal idea of providing a single post with a link and preview and have it in a separate thread. My optimal way would be 3-4 articles but with the poster providing a summary and then some of their own thoughts about the topic to spark conversation.

Some good feedback already.

And just to be clear @john, I’m definitely not complaining. Everything around here is great. I just remember a conversation that @kryptokenzie and I had about this, and then when today I saw 20 consecutive news posts, it seemed like a good time to revisit it.

At the end of the day, I’d prefer they be consolidated into a daily or weekly thread with links, but ultimately I’m good with whatever (even if nothing changes).

I enjoy(ed) johns news article posting but do agree with @Nathan_D that it does bury some of the more in-depth conversations taking place. maybe just because user activity in the pub was so low/slow for a while that it gave me something new to read but much of which i was already getting/seeing on twitter.
think we could consolidate them into “general news post” and even more specific topic related threads within.

Honestly I like all the posted articles. I scan through to see which ones I want to read based on the title. It doesn’t take long, but maybe that’s because I’m on looking multiple times a day. Just my opinion.

31 news articles posted in the last 24h… all by one dude. I appreciate the effort, but this is getting out of hand and is bordering on spam.

Is it tho? John used to do it. Just asking but can’t you just bypass them? What’s the problem. Seriously asking.

I can definitely bypass them, as they aren’t a huge deal.

To be clear though, I’m not complaining, but rather offering feedback.

These mass news postings are (arguably) drowning out the actual real discussions going on, and doing more harm than good. There shouldn’t be 10+ news threads for every member thread. I feel it’s reducing engagement, rather than increasing it.

I’ve made my point already though and will leave it be. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Fair point. Appreciate the explanation and different perspective.

Hey Nathan,

Sorry that you feel this way. I am just posting articles that I think would be beneficial for our community to read. I am by no means trying to spam the pub.

John used to do this, but I have since taken this over. I am happy to hear anyone else’s thoughts on the matter.

@Clayton_Menzel, no need to apologize, as I appreciate the effort and dedication!

I’m by no means suggesting that you stop. I’m merely proposing that we restructure such posts into a daily or weekly thread so as not to bury any ongoing discussions.

Appreciate the hard work, and keep it up!

At one point in time I was trying to aggregate news videos and news articles into the same threads, and try to aggregate similar topics into the same threads, but it ended up being a lot of work and making a (seemingly) marginal difference.
