called fraud department about offshore casino transactions, thought theyd tell me to get fucked
investigator said theyre doing chargeback cause online casinos illegal in australia under iga. logged complaint with ombudsman too
westpac refunded over $1000 yesterday. said one time only and "gesture of goodwill"
honestly didnt think it would work

so you gambled, lost, then got your money back? and if youd won youd have kept the money yeah?
this is absolute horseshit mate, its people like you that make everything harder for everyone else. banks pass these costs on through fees, so everyone else pays for your gambling problem

wait westpac actually did this? what was the complaint to ombudsman about? you authorized the transactions yourself

This is commercially motivated decision by bank, not recognition of legitimate claim. AFCA complaint escalation costs banks significant fees at case management stage - frequently exceeds small refund amounts. Bank calculated refunding £1000 cheaper than defending complaint through formal process. The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes it offence to PROVIDE online casino services to Australian residents, not to USE them. Your transaction was not illegal on your end. Bank knows this but refunded anyway to avoid costs.
Expect this to be noted on your account. Future similar complaints will be declined.

jeez you ve got 2k back from bank in month and still gamblin? mate you need actual help not chargebacks

credit card ban came in mid 2024, but people just switched to debit cards and bank transfers so doesnt really stop it just makes slightly more annoing

yeah and in 2 months when you want to gamble again youll factory reset your phone and find another offshore site
the bank gave you free roll - if you win you keep money, if you lose you complain and get refund. thats what they call scamming bro

NAB (my bank) has gambling block feature too, set it up after losing way too much last year. 48 hour delay to remove it helps cause by time its unlocked the urge usually passed

those casinos literally operate illegally in australia, who gives a fuck if someones "scamming" them

They violate Australian law by PROVIDING services to Australian residents. The individual gambling is not committing criminal offense. This is important legal distinction. The ethical question remains: if he had won $5000, would they have contacted bank to return winnings because service was "illegal"? Obviously not.
This creates perverse incentive structure and Banks enabling it through weak complaint handling sets terrible precedent.
